DAN’SSHIPPING CONTAINERS
Geographe Bay and the Capes

The Capes look like a holiday coast and mostly order working storage.

Builders, renovators and cellar doors make up more of the enquiries than people expect. Tourism still shapes the streets: owners who live elsewhere, summer traffic, and coastal streets that care how things look.

Illustrative container storage scene in an Australian setting

No South West depot of ours

Dan’s has no office and no depot in Busselton, Dunsborough or Margaret River. Containers for the Capes are carried south by road from the third-party Fremantle depot. That yard is not ours, and its address is not on this website.

An inspection at Fremantle can be arranged if you want to see a unit before it travels. Share the dates you have in mind for a summer season or a build. The delivery day is confirmed with the order.

Two councils and the postcodes between them

City of Busselton covers Busselton 6280, West Busselton, Geographe, Broadwater and Vasse on that same 6280, plus Dunsborough 6281, Quindalup and Eagle Bay on 6281, and Yallingup 6282. Yalyalup, the newer residential edge, is also in the City of Busselton.

Shire of Augusta-Margaret River covers Margaret River 6285, Prevelly 6285, Cowaramup 6284 and Gracetown 6284. Augusta is in that shire too, further south.

In Busselton’s established suburbs such as West Busselton, Geographe and Broadwater, most blocks are flat with room beside the house. In Dunsborough, Quindalup and Eagle Bay, lots are often bushier, driveways wind, and peppermint trees crowd the drive. Low branches are a common reason a 20ft cannot reach the spot that looked fine on a plan.

Holiday lets, trees and someone to meet the driver

If the house is a holiday let, a container on the driveway may block a guest’s car or the cleaner. Agree the position with the property manager, and make sure someone can meet the driver or leave clear instructions.

Salt air along Geographe Bay and the ocean coast is hard on steel. For a longer build, check hinges and seals now and then. For storage that stays, a new single-trip starts with better paint. A cargo-worthy used unit is still checked wind and watertight, which is what most tool stores need. As-is stock is not offered as watertight.

Send the town, the council, any bushfire or estate condition you already know, the driveway surface, overhanging trees, and photos of the approach.

Bushfire-prone lots are a council question

Large parts of the Capes are designated bushfire prone under the state’s planning framework. That can change which rules apply, and a container that stays for good may be treated differently from one hired for a few months. Ask City of Busselton or the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River how the rules apply to the site before a long-term box is placed.

A steel container is not a bushfire shelter and should not be treated as one. Keep leaf litter and dry fuel away from it, as you would around a shed. Do not keep fuel or gas bottles in it unless the unit is set up for that purpose and someone qualified has said so.

We do not give structural, bushfire or anchoring advice. Those decisions belong with the council and, where the site needs it, an engineer or building professional.

Wineries, Ironman weekends and Vasse builds

Wineries, breweries, restaurants and function venues use containers for dry goods, equipment, marquee gear and furniture between events. On rural-zoned land, ask the council whether a container counts as an outbuilding and whether setbacks apply. Vineyard tracks need firm, reasonably level ground. Wet winter soil between the rows is no place for a loaded tilt-tray. A steel box in summer sun gets hot inside, so a standard container suits equipment and packaging better than wine or food unless it is shaded and aired. These are not temperature-controlled units.

The Busselton Ironman, surfing contests near Margaret River, and the food and wine festivals rely on temporary storage for equipment, merchandise and bar stock. Organisers usually need sign-off from the land manager, which may be the council, a state agency or a private landholder. Foreshore parks often have soft sand or turf, and bollards or narrow paths may stop a truck. Walk the route with the event’s site manager and send a marked-up map. Share the bump-in date early.

Construction runs from new homes in Vasse and Yalyalup to renovations of older beach houses in Dunsborough. A hired box gives trades a lock-up overnight, which matters on sites that sit quiet between trades. Agree the position with the builder and keep it clear of the future driveway. Town-centre and light-industrial businesses in Busselton and Dunsborough use containers for stock and tools. Seasonal operators such as hire shops, surf schools and caterers often need extra room ahead of summer and can hand it back afterwards. In a shared industrial yard, agree the position with the landlord and the neighbours, and face the doors toward the work. A box in a marked bay can leave a tenancy short of its approved parking.

Capes jobs that are not the postcard

Write the shire next to the town. City of Busselton: Busselton, West Busselton, Geographe, Broadwater, Vasse and Yalyalup on 6280, Dunsborough, Quindalup and Eagle Bay on 6281, Yallingup on 6282. Shire of Augusta-Margaret River: Margaret River and Prevelly on 6285, Cowaramup and Gracetown on 6284, and Augusta further down the coast. Flat blocks in Geographe and Broadwater usually have side room. Dunsborough and Eagle Bay drives wind through peppermint trees. Low limbs stop a 20ft more often than the length of the block does.

Holiday lets need a manager in the loop. A box on the drive can block a guest or a cleaner. Leave instructions that name the spot, or have someone meet the truck. Salt along Geographe Bay marks bare steel. A long stay is kinder on a fresh paint finish. Cargo-worthy used units are checked wind and watertight for ordinary tool storage. As-is is the grade to avoid when a leak would matter.

Bushfire-prone mapping covers a lot of the Capes. A box that stays may be assessed differently from a few months of hire. Ask the relevant council before a permanent placement. A steel container is not a shelter. Clear leaf litter the way you would around a shed, and do not store fuel or gas bottles unless a qualified person has said the unit is set up for it. Anchoring and structural questions go to the council and, where needed, an engineer. We do not provide that advice.

Cellar doors, breweries and function venues store dry goods, marquee frames and furniture between events. Rural zoning may treat a container as an outbuilding with setbacks. Vineyard tracks in winter are a poor surface for a loaded tilt-tray. Summer sun heats the interior, so wine and food want shade and airflow, not a closed steel box. These units are not refrigerated. Ironman week, Margaret River surf contests and wine festivals need the land manager’s sign-off, a marked truck route, and the bump-in date early. Foreshore bollards and soft sand stop more trucks than the highway does.

Vasse and Yalyalup builds, and older Dunsborough beach houses being opened up, use hired site stores between trades. Keep the position off the future driveway. Town-centre and light-industrial tenancies in Busselton and Dunsborough should agree the spot with the landlord so a marked bay is not lost. Surf schools, hire shops and caterers often want the extra room only for summer, then hand it back. Dan’s has no depot in the Capes. The haul is south from a Fremantle depot run by someone else. The address is not listed. A Fremantle inspection can be arranged. The truck day follows the order.

Summer crowds and winter tracks should not be described in the same breath. A Geographe or Broadwater house on flat ground is a side-access conversation. A Quindalup or Eagle Bay drive is a tree-and-bend conversation. Yallingup 6282 and Gracetown 6284 sit closer to the ocean swell and the shire line. Margaret River 6285 and Cowaramup 6284 pull in cellar doors and vineyard soils that soften. Prevelly is the surf-coast end of that shire. Vasse builds are residential construction, not tourism, even when the brochure photos look coastal. Bushfire-prone mapping can apply on any of them and still does not make a container a refuge. Tell us the town, the trees, the track after rain, and who meets the driver at a holiday let. The steel still comes from Fremantle, from a yard Dan’s does not own.

West Busselton blocks on 6280 are often the easy residential version of this coast: flat, a side gate, room for a hire during a bathroom rebuild. That is not a Dunsborough peppermint drive and not a vineyard row near Cowaramup. Yalyalup’s new lots should be described with the builder’s pin, not with a holiday-let story. Augusta, further down the shire, is a longer haul again and should be named rather than folded into “Margaret River”. Festival bump-ins need the land manager and a date. A surf school that only wants the box for the busy months should say when it can be collected. None of those variants creates a Dan’s depot in the Capes or a published Fremantle street.

Capes questions

Which council covers Margaret River, and which covers Dunsborough?

Margaret River, Cowaramup, Gracetown, Prevelly and Augusta are in the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River. Busselton, Dunsborough, Yallingup and Vasse are in the City of Busselton.

Does a bushfire-prone block change a container enquiry?

It can, depending on zoning and how long the box stays. The council can say whether a planning or building application is needed. A container is not a refuge.

Is there a Dan’s depot in the South West?

No. Capes orders come from a third-party Fremantle depot and are driven south. Inspection at Fremantle is by arrangement. No street address is published.

Can a truck reach a vineyard track?

Where the track is firm enough and there is room to unload. Send photos of the gate, the track and the spot, and say how the ground behaves after rain.

Can a hire cover a single summer at a surf school or cellar door?

Yes. It can arrive before the busy period and be collected when that period ends. Tell us the dates you are planning around. The truck day is set with the order.
