Stuart Highway from the Berrimah-area depot
Palmerston does not have its own Dan’s yard. Containers are held at a Darwin depot in the Berrimah area and trucked down the Stuart Highway. That depot is not a Dan’s office, and its street address is not published.
Inspection is by arrangement at the depot. Photographs of the actual unit can be requested before it is sent out to Palmerston.
Hire versus a purchase, for a posting that might end or a yard that will not, is the question in Hire or buy? Start with your timeframe..
0830 suburbs and the 0832 growth edge
City of Palmerston covers the centre and the suburbs. Palmerston 0830 includes Gray, Driver, Moulden, Woodroffe, Durack and the light-industrial area at Yarrawonga. The newer growth sits on 0832: Zuccoli, Johnston, Gunn, Farrar, Bellamack, Rosebery and Bakewell.
Earlier suburbs have wider blocks and established gardens. Newer ones have smaller lots and a lot of building still going on. Container demand follows that: furniture during a move or a renovation, trades at Yarrawonga, builders in the new suburbs, and households between postings who need somewhere for belongings while the next house is sorted.
A 40ft needs a long straight run and more room than most house lots here have. A 10ft or a 20ft is the realistic pair for a residential block.
Carports in Gray, slabs in Zuccoli
In Gray, Driver, Moulden and Woodroffe, most houses have a driveway to a carport and some room at the side. A 20ft usually fits. Look for overhanging trees and low carport roofs, because a tilt-tray has to tip its deck to unload. Photos of the driveway and the spot let us confirm.
If the verge is the only option, ask City of Palmerston first. Keep the footpath clear, and avoid the drains and service pits that sit in many verges.
Zuccoli, Johnston and the other new suburbs are busy with house construction. Builders and trades use hired containers as site stores. Lots are smaller, so place the box clear of the slab, the driveway and the neighbour’s boundary, and keep a path open for collection. Some estates have design guidelines about visible storage. Check the land contract as well as the City if the container will stay after the house is finished.
A builder can have a container on a Zuccoli site when the position is agreed and the truck can reach it. Place it clear of the slab and make sure handover collection is still possible.
Yarrawonga, wet-season grass and cyclone questions
Yarrawonga is the light-industrial area: trade suppliers, workshops and service businesses. Containers hold stock, tools and equipment. Many units share a yard, so agree with the landlord and the neighbours, and keep access clear. For shops near the city centre, check the lease and the parking. A container in a car bay may leave the site short of the parking its approval requires.
Palmerston gets heavy rain through the wet. Unsealed ground and lawns can become too soft for a loaded truck. Sealed driveways and hardstand are usually fine. If the spot is on grass, choose a position near the sealed surface or aim for the dry. Keep the box off low spots where water collects. A cargo-worthy or new single-trip container is sold wind and watertight from above. Surface water can still reach the door seals. As-is units are not sold as watertight.
Palmerston is in a cyclone region. Whether a container needs anchoring depends on the site and how long it stays. Ask a building certifier or an engineer. Planning and building questions go through the NT planning system and certifiers. City of Palmerston looks after verges and local roads. We can supply dimensions and weights. We do not give tie-down advice.
Moves, rentals, clubs and heat
Schools, sporting clubs and community groups use containers between seasons. On council land the City needs to agree the position and the truck route. Ovals can be soft in the wet, so plan for firmer ground.
A container on the driveway holds furniture and boxes until the next place is ready, which suits a posting or a wait on a build. It also suits a renovation, keeping furniture out of the way while floors or a kitchen are redone. If you are renting, the lease may require the owner’s approval. Ask the property manager and give them the length and the duration. Check the box will not block the carport or a neighbour’s driveway.
A steel container in the Top End sun gets much hotter inside than the air around it. Tools, outdoor furniture and packed boxes of household goods usually cope. Electronics, candles, medicines, food and anything with batteries are better kept in the house. Moisture absorbers and pallets under furniture help with the humidity. Send the suburb, the surface, any estate guideline you already know, and photos of the approach and the spot.
Palmerston lots, from Gray carports to Zuccoli fences
Split the postcodes in your own note. 0830 is the earlier city: Gray, Driver, Moulden, Woodroffe, Durack and Yarrawonga. 0832 is the growth edge: Zuccoli, Johnston, Gunn, Farrar, Bellamack, Rosebery and Bakewell. Wider gardens on the 0830 side usually accept a 20ft beside a carport, until a low roof or a tree meets the tilt-tray deck. Photograph both. Verges are a City of Palmerston question. Keep the path clear and miss the drains and pits.
Zuccoli and Johnston builds want the position agreed with the builder before the temporary fence closes the lot. Off the slab, off the neighbour’s boundary, still collectable at handover. Estate guidelines can ban a box that was fine during construction once the house is finished. Read the land contract. A 40ft is longer than these house lots can usually host. A 10ft is the calm choice when the frontage is already full.
Yarrawonga shared yards need the landlord and the neighbour on side, with the truck path left open. A shop that drops a container into a car bay can fall short of its parking approval. Check the lease. Wet-season grass is the soft failure. Sealed drives are the reliable ones. If the pad is lawn, stay near the seal or wait for the dry, and stay off puddles. A cargo-worthy or new single-trip unit is sold so rain from above stays out. Water on the ground can still meet the seals. As-is is the wrong pick when the load must stay dry.
Cyclone tie-down is a certifier or engineer question, not a line we will invent. City of Palmerston handles verges and local roads. The NT planning system handles the rest. We can hand over dimensions and weights. Rentals in Driver or Durack need the owner’s yes. The lease often says so. Clubs and schools on council land need a route that survives the wet. Ovals soften.
Moves between postings are a driveway full of boxes until the next house is ready. Keep the carport usable and the neighbour’s drive clear. Top End sun makes the interior much hotter than the verandah. Tools and packed household cartons usually cope. Electronics, medicines, food and batteries belong in the house. Pallets and moisture absorbers help furniture. The Stuart Highway run starts at the Berrimah-area depot. Dan’s does not own it and does not publish the street. Inspection is by arrangement, or photos of the actual unit can be sent before it leaves. Include the suburb, the surface and any estate rule you already know.
Palmerston is easy to flatten into one suburb and awkward to deliver that way. Gray, Driver, Moulden and Woodroffe on 0830 still have the older carport pattern. Durack sits with them. Yarrawonga is the industrial exception on the same postcode, shared yards and trade suppliers rather than front lawns. Zuccoli and Johnston on 0832 are the build sites. Gunn, Farrar, Bellamack, Rosebery and Bakewell are the same newer lot size. A rental needs the property manager. A builder needs the lot still open to a truck at handover. A wet-season lawn needs a sealed fallback. Cyclone anchoring stays with a certifier. The Stuart Highway is only the link back to the Berrimah-area depot Dan’s does not own. Say the suburb and the surface, and the quote stops being a guess.
A posting that ends in three months is a hire with a collection date, not a permanent shed. Say that date. A Zuccoli slab that will be fenced next week needs the box placed while the truck can still leave. A Yarrawonga unit with a shared aisle needs the neighbour’s agreement in the email, not after the driver arrives. Gray and Driver carports need a note about roof height because the deck of a tilt-tray rises. Moulden and Woodroffe verges, if they are the only pad, are a City of Palmerston question before anyone books a day. Wet-season photos of the lawn are more useful than a dry-season guess. We still do not design cyclone tie-downs, and we still do not print a street for the Berrimah-area depot the container leaves from.
