High Cube Shipping Containers

Same footprint, 300mm more head height. It sounds trivial written down and it is the difference between a container you can work in and a container you can only store in.

What you get

  • 2.89m external height against 2.59m for a standard, giving about 2.69m inside
  • Available in 20ft and 40ft, new single-trip and used
  • The default choice for workshops, gyms, offices and anything getting a fit-out
  • Cargo-worthy units are checked wind and watertight before they leave the depot
  • Worth checking your height clearance twice — gateways, carports and awnings are where high cubes come unstuck

The detail worth knowing

The extra 300mm buys you three things. Room for a floor build-up or insulation without losing usable height. Room for lighting and conduit in the roof line. And enough clearance that a person of ordinary height does not spend the whole day ducking under the door header.

It costs you clearance on the way in. A high cube on a tilt-tray sits high, and a gateway or a carport that a standard container clears comfortably can stop a high cube dead. Measure the lowest thing between the road and the spot before you order one.

For anything that is going to be converted — a site office, a workshop, a gym, a pump shed — a high cube is nearly always the better start. Retro-fitting height into a standard container is not a thing that can be done.
