General Purpose Shipping Containers

The standard box, and the right answer about eighty per cent of the time. Corrugated Corten steel, marine-ply floor, double cargo doors at one end, forklift-friendly and — in cargo-worthy grade — sealed against rain from above.

What you get

  • New single-trip and quality used units in 10ft, 20ft and 40ft
  • Every cargo-worthy unit is checked wind and watertight before it leaves the depot
  • As-is units are cheaper again and are not sold watertight — we tell you what is wrong with one rather than let you find out on delivery day
  • Lock box fitted so a padlock cannot be reached with bolt cutters
  • Photos of your actual unit on request, sent before delivery

The detail worth knowing

A general purpose container is 2.59m tall externally, which gives you about 2.39m of internal height. That is enough to stand a pallet racking bay in, enough to walk around under, and not quite enough to comfortably fit a mezzanine or a roller door with the head clearance a forklift wants. If either of those is on your list, look at a high cube instead.

The floor is 28mm marine-grade plywood on steel cross-members and it is the part people underestimate. It will take a forklift and it will take a pallet jack, but it is also the first thing to go on a container that has spent years carrying something wet. On any used unit, the floor is the thing to look at first and the thing we photograph first.

Doors are the other wear point. A general purpose has two cargo doors at one end with four locking bars and a rubber gasket around the frame. When a container is described as wind and watertight, most of what is being tested is that gasket seating properly and the bars pulling the doors up hard against it.
